What is Supported Living?

Our services and employees are committed to providing person centred individualised care, supporting people to develop their independent skills, to realise personal goals and future aspirations.

Supported living offers accommodation for people of all genders diagnosed with a learning disability, physical disabilities, or secondary neurological conditions including mental illness / disorders, brain injury and dementia. Support and tenancies can be provided from the age of 18 with no upper age limit. One of our principles for providing this type of service is to align with the ‘reach standards’ for supported living and the ‘real tenancy test’.

All people referred to the service, and any subsequent placement offer will be determined following an ‘holistic assessment’ and our capability to meet the person’s needs. It is also essential that those already residing within a shared service and the person referred are compatible; staged introductions, phased transition and choice are essential within shared services.

What is Supported Living IST (intensive support team)?

The purpose of the IST is to support people who find it difficult to share with others. Each person can be supported to experience a unique person-centred approach, ‘with’ or ‘without’ structure and routine, reflective of the person’s needs. To help illustrate this; people with ASD who struggle to process change, or those who experience sensory impairments may become distressed with any changes or unexpected stimuli; therefore, within the IST service, we create a stable, predictable environment, reduced social demands and the avoidance of triggers enabling people to live with reduced anxiety.

Sometimes the people we support may have difficulties expressing emotions or coping when things in life do not go expected. This can cause some people such distress that they may display behaviours that challenge; for some people, this is the only coping strategy they have developed. Supporting this group of people in single occupancy settings, enables ‘individual’ responses and the ability to keep the person and others safe during a crisis.
